The organising committee of the the 2nd International Symposium on Underutilised Plant Species entitled “Crops for the Future – Beyond Food Security” is pleased to invite you to the symposium to be held in The Royale Chulan Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia 27th June – 1st July 2011. The Symposium is organised under the auspices of the International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS) with support from the ISHS Working Group on Underutilised Plant Genetic Resources, the ISHS Commission on Plant Genetic Resources and the ISHS Section on Tropical and Sub-Tropical Fruits. The symposium is co-convened and supported by the University of Nottingham  Malaysia Campus, Crops for the Future, Bioversity International, the British Council, and the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute.

Crops for the Future – beyond Food Security emphasises the potential role of underutilised plant species to contribute to global food security and nutrition, buffering against the consequences of climate change and increasing agricultural biodiversity.
The Symposium is organised around five main areas that will, together, identify approaches and methodologies used in research for the development of underutilised plant species viz.:

         - Nutritional, food-processing and end-user values
        - Economic and marketing potential - building value chains
        - Physiology, agronomy and agro-ecological potential
        - Biotechnology, breeding and seed systems
        - Strategic approaches for research and development
